What type bows are used in Olympic target competition?
Recurve bows.
What are recurve bows?
Recurve bows are designed to have the ends of the limbs where the strings are attached turn away from the archer, unlike the long bow which has the ends of the bow turn towards the archer. A recurve bow consists of a bow riser, limbs, and a string. When a recurve bow is unstrung, it will disassemble into three parts for easy transport and adaptability. The “riser,” which is usually made of metal but can also be made of wood or carbon, is where you grip the bow. The top and bottom sections are referred to as “limbs,” and they are made of wood, fiberglass, carbon, and other materials.
Why do the limbs of some recurve bows detach from the riser?
The recurve bow consists of two main parts 1) the riser ( grip handle) and 2) the limbs. One riser can be fitted with many limb combinations to lengthen the bow, to increase the draw weight of the bow and to be able to select different manufacturers products that use the ILF system. The also facilitate storage and transportation.
What is the ILF System?
Manufacturers have agreed to a standardized system for attaching the limbs to the riser, so that archers can choose from a wide array of products to enhance their shooting enjoyment.
Are there any other advantages of the Recurve bow?
As archers grow in size, strength or expand their interest into other activities, such as hunting, they do not have to buy a complete bow. One riser can add different limb combinations to achieve different different objectives.

Is archery safe?
Did you know fewer than one in every 1,000 people participating in archery suffer any injuries? That statistic is very impressive compared to most outdoor sports (Football, Soccer, Baseball, and many others). The reason is directly related to the training that most beginning archers receive when first introduced to archery.
It is the responsibility of not just the archery coach, but of you, your young archer, and of every adult present at the archery range, to insure that the safety rules are followed. Young archers must understand the importance of following the rules anytime s/he is shooting or is around someone else that is shooting. These rules and methods are the reason target archery is one of the safest sports.
What are the safety rules?
- NEVER EVER POINT A LOADED BOW AT ANOTHER PERSON
- Obey all the commands of the person “Running the Line”.
- Do not load the bow with an arrow until you are on the shooting line AND one whistle blast has been sounded.
- Never cross the shooting line unless you hear three whistle blasts.
- Never ‘Dry Fire’ a bow (draw back the string to full draw and release without an arrow).
- Never draw a bow unless facing towards the target and with no one in front of you.
- Do not walk behind an archer when they are at full draw.
- Always ensure that any clothing, jewelry or hair will not interfere with the equipment.
- Always warm up correctly
- Never shoot directly upwards.
- If in doubt – ask.
